What to Know About MR-Guided Focused Ultrasound
- What Is Focused Ultrasound?
-
Focused ultrasound, also known as MR-guided focused ultrasound, is a simple yet powerful treatment that can help you get back to doing what matters most to you.
Guided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology, your doctor will use concentrated sound waves to heat the areas of your brain that are linked to essential tremor. This interrupts the abnormal brain activity responsible for your tremors without damaging healthy, surrounding tissue.
This procedure does not require an incision, and we do it on an outpatient basis. It’s delivered in a single session, typically causes minimal complications and usually results in immediate tremor improvement.
Most patients return home within less than 24 hours. - Who Are the Best Candidates?
-
Ultrasound treatment for essential tremor is approved for people whose tremor cannot be controlled with medication. It may be an option for:
- Treatment on one side of the brain only among those who are 22 years of age or older
- Treatment on one side of the brain only among those who are 30 years of age or older with tremor-dominant Parkinson’s disease
- Is It Right for Me?
-
Speaking with your doctor is the best way to learn if MRI-guided focused ultrasound is right for you. Your doctor can discuss the benefits and risks and help you determine if this treatment option is likely to be beneficial for your unique symptoms and condition.
