To meet the unique needs of the increasing number of patients suffering from pancreatic conditions, the AdventHealth Center for Interventional Endoscopy (CIE) launched Central Florida’s first dedicated Pancreas Center in December 2021. This multidisciplinary center provides coordinated, whole-person care for patients with a range of pancreatic conditions, including the following:

  • Recurrent acute pancreatitis
  • Chronic pancreatitis
  • Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI)
  • Hereditary pancreatitis
  • Pancreatic cysts
  • Complex diseases of the pancreatico-biliary system

The Pancreas Center at CIE also offers hereditary pancreatic cancer screening and can help facilitate care for patients with pancreatic cancers.

Multidisciplinary, Whole-Person Pancreatic Care

Through this new center, a team of specialists from a multitude of disciplines, including gastroenterology, surgery, endocrinology, radiology, oncology, nutrition, health psychology, genetic testing and counseling, and pain management, work together to not only treat pancreatic disease, but to care for each individual patient as a whole person — mind, body and spirit. The primary goal is to optimize treatment — including medical, endoscopic and surgical options — to get the disease under better control and improve the patient’s quality of life.

Personalized Treatment Plans

Each CIE Pancreas Center patient begins their care journey with a clinical consultation, and then a customized treatment plan is created to meet their unique needs. While treatment may include surgery or endoscopic therapy, such as endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), the care team understands that these procedures are just one component of disease management, especially for patients with chronic and complex pancreatic conditions.

The team is also committed to working in close partnership with referring physicians to co-manage patients and serve as a resource for challenging and complex pancreatic cases. In addition, a nurse coordinator with easy access to the entire care team ensures that patients have a single point of contact at the CIE Pancreas Center to help manage their care.

Ongoing Research and Access to Clinical Trials

The CIE physician team is also actively involved in ongoing pancreatic research to explore clinical outcomes and help identify potential new treatments. As a result, Pancreas Center patients have access to clinical trials when established methods have proven ineffective.

About the AdventHealth CIE

Founded in 2012, CIE was Central Florida’s first Interventional Endoscopy Center and has since evolved to become one of the largest complex endoscopy centers in the country. Attracting patients from across the globe, CIE integrates therapeutic endoscopy with minimally invasive surgery to diagnose and treat a wide range of gastrointestinal diseases from pancreatico-biliary diseases and cancerous and pre-cancerous gastrointestinal lesions to swallowing disorders among others. These endoscopic interventions often provide an alternative to more invasive surgeries.

The AdventHealth CIE is led by a skilled team of experienced physicians who not only are committed to providing the best quality care to patients but are also knowledge generators and take pride in educating and training the next generation of advanced endoscopists.
