A minimally invasive treatment that improves the quality of life for asthmatic patients. AdventHealth Altamonte Springs is one of only two locations in the local area to offer this procedure. This is a treatment for cases of severe, persistent asthma that results in significant improvement for many patients. The minimally invasive procedure delivers controlled, therapeutic radio frequency energy to the airway walls causing the restriction to reduce its mass. This helps open the airways, and is conducted over multiple sessions.

Meet Dr. Tabarak Qureshi
Dr. Qureshi completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowships in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine from the Detroit Medical Center, Wayne State University. He is currently the vice president at the Central Florida Pulmonary Group and has been practicing in Central Florida for the last 10 years. He is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Central Florida School of Medicine and the transformational medical director of the ICU at AdventHealth Altamonte. His special interests include obstructive lung disease and disorders of sleep. He has vast experience in treating patient with severe asthma and is the director of the bronchial thermoplasty program at AdventHealth Altamonte.

We have a new treatment option for emphysema and COPD at AdventHealth Altamonte. The Zephyr Valves are the first minimally invasive procedure to help patient breathe easier without the risks of major surgery.
Before the Zephyr Valves, the only options for relief were highly invasive treatments including lung surgeries which many patients could not tolerate. Having a less invasive option has the potential to improve the quality of life for many emphysema sufferers in Florida and beyond.

- How does the Procedure Work?

The one-time procedure is done during a bronchoscopy that requires no cutting or incisions. During the procedure, on average 4 tiny valves are placed in the airways to block off the diseased parts of the lungs. The valves reduce hyperinflation, preventing air from being trapped in the diseased area of the lung and allowing healthier parts of the lung to take in more air. This results in patients being able to breathe easier. Patients treated have reported immediate relief.
