A Small Device Offering Big Hope
Whether your heart emergency was caused by injury, surgery or infection, our team is here for you. And thanks to the Impella® heart pump, we have more options than ever before to help you heal.
While it may be the world’s smallest heart pump, it offers big results. Using intelligent technology to provide full cardiac support, the device increases blood flow, allowing your heart to rest and restore its natural pumping function after a cardiac event. Without it, many patients wouldn’t be able to safely have the emergency, lifesaving procedures they need.
We’re here to help you find the right health provider or a location that’s convenient for you.
Extra Support During Lifesaving Procedures
- How Impella Cardiac Pumps Work
-
People with a weak heart muscle or certain types of blockages, as well as those who are having a heart attack or are in cardiogenic shock, can greatly benefit from the assistance of a heart pump. The tiny Impella pump is implanted during high-risk, lifesaving procedures to help maintain blood flow.
The cardiology experts at the AdventHealth Pepin Heart Institute in Tampa are approved to use different Impella pumps. Many factors, including your unique health condition, determine which pump will work best for you.
The minimally invasive Impella device is usually removed within days, once your heart begins to heal. Those early days are critical, and patients who receive Impella show improved survival rates and better heart recovery.
Impella RP®
Impella RP® with SmartAssist offers temporary support for your blood circulation after congestive heart failure, heart attack and other critical cardiac events. AdventHealth Tampa was the third non-transplant hospital in Florida to implant the Impella RP Flex heart pump, and the second in the Tampa Bay area. Impella RP is also the only pump with two sensors, offering advanced technology when you need it most.
Impella RP Flex®
Impella RP Flex® is the most advanced version of the Impella RP heart pump, designed with a flexible catheter, and an extra-supportive guidewire that makes it easy to implant. This flexibility allows the surgeon precise delivery and placement of the Impella RP Flex pump into your heart.
Impella ECP
The Impella ECP device is newly developed and still being tested. In fact, AdventHealth Tampa is one of only three hospitals in Florida serving as a testing site for the new model. Impella ECP will be the world’s smallest heart pump, making it useful when the surgeon has limited access to the precise location needed in your heart. Like other Impella devices, the ECP is implanted through a catheter and placed precisely where it’s needed in your heart.
What makes Impella ECP unique is its ability to double in length once in place, and then reduce in size before it is removed. Another feature of Impella ECP is that it sits across the heart valve and opens only when the pump is flowing. When needed, the valve leaflets close around the pump, allowing your heart valve to continue working as it should — all on its own.
- Know What to Expect
-
To place the Impella pump, your doctor inserts a thin, flexible tube into the femoral artery in your leg, allowing us to lead the device to the left ventricle of your heart. Imaging technology helps us to place the pump and monitor your progress throughout the procedure.
Once in place, the Impella cardiac pump provides the mechanical assistance you need, so your heart can rest while our care team performs the coronary intervention procedure you need. Then, when the intervention procedure is complete, we’ll turn off the device and guide it back out unless your heart needs continued support until your condition is stable.
- Find Out Who’s a Good Candidate
-
You may be a candidate for an Impella cardiac pump if you:
- Are considered too high-risk for a stent procedure
- Have a weak heart that isn’t pumping well
- Have other chronic health conditions
- Recently were admitted to the hospital for your heart condition
- Struggle with daily activities, such as walking to the mailbox
